Title: Local Group Archaeology: Digging Up the Past Lives of Galaxies
Abstract: How do galaxies form and evolve? Local Group archaeology seeks to answer this question by leveraging the detail, breadth, and depth of observations that are only possible for galaxies within our home galaxy system, the Local Group. Here, we can observe billions of individual stars, presenting both a big data challenge and a unique opportunity to create an extremely detailed picture of our home galaxy and her nearest neighbors. In this talk, I will introduce some of the tools of Local Group archaeology and discuss how I use these tools to help better understand galaxy formation and evolution. I will highlight some of the new data and simulations that are expanding our toolkit, and detail the development of new, multi-modal approaches to presenting data.
