C茅line Debourse (Harvard University)  will speak on "Babylon and its Many Ends". Lunch will be at 12, the lecture will be at 12:30.

More about this lecture:
Scholars often imagine Babylon to have had three lives: its ancient existence as a center of cuneiform culture, its afterlife in memory and myth, and its modern revival as a symbol of Iraqi identity. The tendency is to see these three lives as distinct and self-contained, yet this talk questions whether such boundaries truly hold. Focusing on Babylon鈥檚 first life, it revisits the many scholarly 鈥渆nds鈥 ascribed to its history. Through seven snapshots of supposed decline, the talk exposes how each ending contains persistence and renewal. By shifting from narratives of rupture to those of transformation, I propose a more organic view of historical change. Ultimately, I ask what is lost, both scholarly and ethically, when we insist that Babylon, and cuneiform culture, truly came to an end.
