Pedagogical Planning and Facilitation Workshops

Held each fall, the TLI offers four open pedagogy workshops for graduate and post-doc students at Bryn Mawr's Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research as well as Bryn Mawr's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences to systematically explore fundamental pedagogical issues and approaches, which include developing inclusive and equitable approaches to teaching and learning.

Workshops are open sessions of B676/SOWK 676 Making Space For Learning: Pedagogical Planning and Facilitation in Higher Education, a semester-long course cross-listed between the Graduate School of Social Work and the undergraduate colleges. Each pedagogy workshop is 2.5 hours.

Workshop Topics:

WHAT ARE THE KEY ELEMENTS OF COURSE DESIGN?

In this session, we will discuss integrated course design--how to design and structure learning opportunities that utilize a backwards design approach with meaningful alignment between course goals, assessments, and learning activities. 

HOW DO I STRUCTURE A CLASS SESSION FOR MAXIMUM STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND UNDERSTANDING?

In this session, we will focus on daily lesson planning at the tertiary level, discussing how to draw upon active learning strategies to facilitate student engagement and understanding. 

HOW DO I ENSURE THAT ALL OF MY STUDENTS FEEL SAFE, RESPECTED AND INCLUDED?

In this session, we will explore the meanings and relevance of safety, risk, and trust in relationship to pedagogy. We will examine dimensions of difference that impact student experience and will discuss how to create an inclusive classroom environment. 

HOW DO I DEVELOP A TEACHING STYLE? 

In this session we will spend some time exploring different conceptions of teaching and discuss how to create a style that is congruent with your commitments and
