Visit & Request

Open to the public, Special Collections welcomes all students, staff, faculty, researchers, and visitors who wish to use the collections. We require one business day to pull items from the rare book collection and the college archive, and three business days to pull items from the art & artifact collections. In addition to individual and small group research visits, we also welcome class visits!

Before your research visit:

  • Are you ready to request objects for your visit? In advance of your planned visit, email speccoll@brynmawr.edu the title, classification number, accession number, or box and folder number for any materials you wish to use. We require at least 1 business day to retrieve rare books, manuscripts, and archives and at least 3 business days to retrieve art and artifacts.
  • Do you need assistance selecting materials to request from Special Collections? Sign up for a  with a Special Collections staff member who will help you navigate our collection discovery systems.
  • Did your instructor put materials on hold for a class? To consult materials that are on reserve for a class, researchers are encouraged to visit the Reading Room during our drop-in hours or schedule a Class Assignment visit.
  • If you are feeling ill, reschedule your appointment. Per the College’s health services guidance, we recommend that if you are ill that you refrain from being in an enclosed area for prolonged periods (more than 15 minutes) around others. Our reading room is a small space that doesn’t allow personal distance of 6 feet or more from staff and other researchers.

Getting to campus:

  • Whether you are traveling from near or far, our maps and directions can help you navigate to ÌÒ×ÓÊÓƵ. Our Reading Room is on the 2nd floor of Canaday Library, centrally located on campus.
  • Looking for recommendations about dining, accommodations, and additional things to do in the area? Please see the College's visitors guide.

During your research visit:

  • When you arrive in the Reading Room, TriCo-affiliated researchers can sign in at the desk with a TriCollege ID. Researchers without a TriCollege ID will present a government-issued photo ID and be asked to fill out a short registration form.
  • Pencils, notebooks, laptops, tablets, cameras and camera phones are all welcome in Special Collections. (Digital images may be taken as long as the flash is turned off. Some collections may have restrictions that prevent photography.)
  • Please leave jackets, bags, laptop cases, folders, pens, food (including gum and hard candy) and drinks in the cubbies or lockers.
  • Handle materials carefully. The materials will be brought from storage and set-up on tables for you. Keep materials supported on cradles, stands, or tables, as instructed by staff. Do not trace or write on top of the materials.
